Mexico City is having its moment. From the trendy boutiques on Masaryk, Polanco, to the modern, chic high rises of Santa Fe, the city is a vein of pulsing vibrancy, colour and energy. An International Jet-Set crowd, fill the trendy bars and hotels, where they settle, to enjoy a scene of creativity, innovative design and continual inspiration.
A sprawling city, made up of distinct neighbourhoods, the young and bohemian, La Condesa, has to be one of my favorites. A hip and happening, artsy area, full of restaurants, bars and buzzing nightlife, it is the epicentre of artists, musicians, movie making and people watching. I like to call it Mexico City’s East Village.
Here are my picks on the coolest places to eat & be inspired in this cultural hub:
Contramar: An upscale lunch spot specializing in what has to be, the finest quality Fish & Seafood in the city. A well heeled crowd enjoy melt in your mouth dishes like fluke ceviche and octopus tostadas.
Calle Durango 200 , Colonia Roma, 52-55-5514-3169
El Japonez: It may look humble and unassuming from the outside, but this Mexican-Japenese Fusion Restaurant, is still one of my most memorable meals in Mexico. I crave it in my sleep. Order one of everything. Must Try: The Sushi Cake, Black Cod Taco, Coco Roll and Spicy Tua Almond Roll. Strawberry Sashimi with lychee ice cream for dessert!
Vicente Suarez 42, Condesa, 52860712
This causal, airy, modernized version of the typical Mexican Cantina, uses fresh and local ingredients to create homey and traditional Mexican childhood favorites, such as better than abuela’s-Chicken Mole and a rich Fideo Seco, all served within an ambience of kitschy wall art , high ceilings, by sophisticated waitstaff.
Nuevo León 137, Hipódromo, 06100 Mexico, 5 5256 5159
Hip Kitchen at The Hippodrome Hotel: A mod 1930’s Art deco building, specializing in Mexican Fusion cuisine. Don’t miss the edamame and prosciutto
Avenida Mexico No. 188, Mexico City 06100, Mexico, 5552122110
Casa Roma: This is technically in La Roma district just outside of Condesa, but it’s one of my favorite places to eat, drink and meet new friends, so most definitely deserves a mention. Unfortunately you will find no info online, and will have a hard time acquiring the address, (I cannot disclose it here, Im afraid!), unless an insider city dweller, lets you in on the secret. A multi level bohemian house, opens its doors for those in the know, and serves up a new menu every night, where you can eat, drink and enjoy the night with friends in any one of the artsy decorated, and slightly decrepit rooms. I hope you find it!
Where to Stay? Condesa DF Hotel. A chic and contemporary designed hotel, full of bold, white furniture, graphics and clean lines. The roof terrace is the perfect place to bump into stylish characters, like Sienna Miller and Rhys Ifans.
Where to Shop? Chic by Accident You’ll find the most interesting, eclectic and unique furniture and art pieces from around the globe.
